On Sunday the final four of the A7FL featured not only four of the A7FL’s elite teams squaring off for their shot at $25,000 and the A7 Championship but also may have established one team as a potential dynasty in defeat.
The final four began inside the confines of Asbury Park Stadium with the Baltimore Rare Breed riding high as the number two seed after their biggest victory to date over the Tampa NightCrawlers, but immediately being brought back down to earth by a determined Paterson U squad.
The U are looking for their chance at immortality, as they look to become the first team in A7FL history to win three straight championships while making their fourth straight appearance in the biggest game of the League’s calendar.
Behind the effort of Quatrelle Huffin and dynamic receiver Kyle Ward, the Paterson U stayed alive against an angry and foreboding Baltimore Rare Breed defense.
But it would be the U, relying on Huffin and a veteran and playoff savvy squad who would punch the first ticket to their historic fourth straight A7FL championship, looking to prove that no matter what the regular season record said, they are the elite franchise in the league.
Our second contest would see a Trenton BIC franchise donning their “Death Row” red jerseys, as they looked to prove a point against the Baltimore Gators, a team that experienced the bitter pill of losing to the BIC in the playoffs, falling in the 2021 regional final four to the eventual runners up.
While Sterry Codrington and Ashante Worthy were not in their traditional “All-World” form, the defensive effort from rookies John Columbia, Alex Verardi and John Burton, the latter of which got a pick-six on Gators’ quarterback Ricky Robinson, proved to be the right galvanizer to lead the BIC to their second straight A7FL Championship, trouncing the Gators 38-6.
Now the stage is set for July 10th, where the U and BIC will meet for the fifth time in two seasons, with the U taking the first two in the 2021 divisional and national championships, and the BIC taking the 2022 showdowns in the regular season and divisional championship game respectively.
Will the BIC win their second championship and prove that they are the new cornerstones of the eight-year-old league, or will the Paterson U be able to prove that they are still the big dogs of the A7FL and that no matter how powerful the offense or intimidating the defense, it’s still “all about the U.”
